Applicant Profiles


Laurie Bailer received her B.A. in cultural anthropology from James Madison University. Since then she has gained experience in both the small business and non-profit sectors, including general management, marketing and sales, and communications. Laurie is a 2011 Global MBA student. She currently serves as VP of Service on GW's Net Impact board and is pursuing a career in marketing strategy for education reform or brand management for sustainable products and services.


 Karen Bulthuis is a 2011 Global MBA with an emphasis in International Business & Development. Karen has 6 years of experience working in non-profit management, most recently with a local microfinance organization in Liberia and before that with an international women's NGO in New York, which supported economic development initiatives for women across the developing world. Karen has been interning at Calvert since Spring 2010, researching diversity & corporate governance. She has a BA in English from Calvin College.




Virginia Castro is a 2012 Global MBA. After graduating from GWU CCAS ’06, Virginia began her career at International Strategy & Investment Inc. (ISI), a mid-size economic research and investment management firm, in Manhattan. She was an associate for 4.5 years and worked in mutual fund and hedge fund sales. She is currently transitioning from investment management to sustainable development and environmental management and policy because she would like to learn about deal-making with a triple bottom line agenda. She wants to have direct impact within a community and believes that business is the best mechanism to effect change.


John Dillman is a 2012 GW MBA candidate. He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematical-economics from Colorado College in 2007 and has spent the last several years working in the citizen sector. Most recently, John coordinated global fellowship for Ashoka's Youth Venture, an organization that supports the work of young social entrepreneurs. Prior to joining Youth Venture, John taught english to university students in Kathmandu, Nepal, and raised funds for a Nepali expedition to Mount Everest. Post-GW, John hopes to break into the energy industry, working either to promote the adoption of clean technologies or increase energy efficiency. 




Jeremy Dommu is a 2011 Global MBA candidate with concentrations in Environmental Policy and Management. He is a Certified Public Accountant with 5 years of experience in public accounting at the Reznick Group and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has earned a certificate in greenhouse gas  from the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute and upon graduation, plans to work with organizations to measure and reduce their carbon emissions in order to combat climate change. This summer, Jeremy will be joining the Environmental Defense Fund's Climate Corps program where he will work on identifying, analyzing, and implementing energy efficiency solutions that save companies money while reducing carbon emissions. Lara Gast is a 2011 Global MBA candidate focusing her studies in Environmental Policy and Operations Management. Previously, Lara received her bachelor of science in Finance and Operations Management from Boston University’s School of Management.  With a strong interest in environmental sustainability, Lara looks to leverage her academic and professional experiences to work on environmental or climate change initiatives.











Kirstin A. Gunderson, LEED AP is a 2012 Global MBA candidate. She graduated cum laude from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in International Development, and minors in Spanish and Business Administration. Kirstin has since lived and worked abroad in Latin America and East Africa, focusing on issues of international development and sustainability.
  Kirstin comes to GW from her role as Director of Certification for the Council for Responsible Sport, where she managed their sustainability certification programming.  Prior to joining CRS, Kirstin worked as an Environmental Consultant for Wannamaker Consulting, Inc, and as a member of the Corporate Social Responsibility team at REI. Kirstin is co-founder of Starting with Sports, an interactive look at sports for social change, and the Portland Sustainability Think Tank, a working group for sustainability practitioners.  Kirstin is a LEED Accredited Professional.  At GW, she is focused on Environmental Management and Policy, and is the President elect of Net Impact.


Hillary Hearn is a 2012 Global MBA candidate with a focus in Environmental Management and Policy. She received a bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of California Santa Cruz. After her undergraduate studies, Hillary served two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of Vanuatu, a South Pacific Island Nation. While in the Peace Corps, she worked on various projects encompassing water management, conservation and environmental education, HIV/AIDs awareness and small business development. Hillary plans to use her experiences and degrees to bridge the gap between environmental sustainability and traditional business. 





Harry Heisler is a 2011 Global MBA student at the George Washington University’s Graduate School of Business. After graduating from Florida International University in 1998 with a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering, Harry has worked for a small environmental consulting firm and at the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, where his responsibilities included directing the evaluation and permitting process of oil and gas, energy, industrial, and hazardous waste treatment projects. Harry is fluent in Spanish and has an intermediate level of French. Harry is currently an 
                                                      analyst at Taylor-DeJongh. 



Bauback Bobby Kia is a 2012 Global MBA candidate. He worked for three years as an associate asset manager for a international private investment firm in Southern California while serving part time as a research assistant and newsletter editor for a non-profit advisory organization for social enterprise.  His experiences include two months in Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo where he facilitated the establishment of a commercial maize farm and housing development and served as a primary school teacher.  He has volunteered with several nonprofits and is proficient in Farsi, French and Spanish.  He graduated (BA) with honors in social and political philosophy from the University of Colorado where he participated in graduate level sociological research. Mr. Kia intends on pursuing a career in international development, wherein he aims to apply principles of social innovation towards solving development challenges.  


Dmitry Polyakov is a 2011 Global MBA candidate. He has a bachelor’s degree in International Comparative Politics from the American University, in Kyrgyzstan and a master’s degree in International Relations from the Saint Petersburg State University (Russia). He has over 7 years of experience working in the international nonprofit sector.  His academic interests focus on sustainability and businesses ethics.  Currently, Dmitry is doing a corporate social responsibility-related internship at Volkswagen Group of America.  Upon graduation, Dmitry hopes to continue his career in the international corporate social responsibility sector.





Eliza Roberts is 2011 Global MBA student at George Washington University and serves as VP of Curriculum Change on GW's Net Impact board. Eliza has experience in both the private and non-profit sector. She has worked for Coca-Cola India to implement a Corporate Social Responsibility project with a focus on water and recently returned to India this summer to work for ACCESS Development Services, where she helped to develop an India Water Fund for the poor. Eliza received a B.A. from Bates College with double majors in Russian and Global Environmental Policy. She is interested in CSR and any and all issues pertaining to environmental sustainability within the private sector with a particular focus on food and water issues.






Julie Schlack is a 2012 Global MBA candidate. She received a bachelor's degree in International Business and Economics from the University of Saint Catherine. Julie has extensive experience working in the non-profit sector. Her academic interests focus on international development and sustainability.











Andrew Seal is a 2012 MBA candidate with concentrations in International Business and Energy Finance. He earned his B.A. from Franklin and Marshall College with a dual degree in Philosophy and Government. Prior to his MBA studies, Andrew served in the United States Marine Corps earning numerous awards, medals and commendations while completing three deployments in countries throughout the Middle East, Central and East Asia, and East Africa. Andrew currently serves on George Washington University’s CleanTech U board and upon graduation, he plans to apply his expertise in leadership, strategic planning and international project management in the energy industry focusing on fossil fuel alternatives. He is competent in Italian, enjoys music, hiking, camping, skiing and  
                                             collecting wine.





Priyanka Tayal is a 2011 Global MBA and Global Leaders Fellow at the George Washington University with concentrations in Strategic Management & Public Policy and International Business. Priyanka is originally from India and has lived in 6 countries, including Malaysia, Jordan and Tanzania. She worked in finance in New York for four years prior to pursuing her studies and is an alumni of the University of Miami, where she double majored in Economics and Marketing, and minored in Anthropology. Priyanka is interested in poverty reduction, economic sustainability and development policies, and plans to work in international economic development following her studies at GWU. 






Erik Walenza-Slabe  is a 2011 MBA candidate pursuing dual degrees in Business Management and International Affairs, with a formal concentration in international business. While earning his undergraduate degree in political science and philosophy, Erik taught mathematics and philosophy at the Centro de EducaciĆ³n Creativa in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Upon graduation, he lived for three years in Central America and East Asia, teaching English in Costa Rica, China, Korea and Japan, while studying Spanish and Mandarin. After motorcycling through Tibet from western China, Erik co-founded and personally financed the Barhabise Development Foundation in Nepal. Through the Foundation Erik directed construction of   
Barhabise’s first public toilets and public garden and started a free community education center. After eight months, with his personal finances expended, Erik returned home to Oregon to work with the City of Portland’s Office of Management and Finance. Erik is currently Director of GW Community Consulting, through which students offer pro bono business development consultation to socially responsible businesses.







Amy Warren is a Global Leaders Fellow specializing in strategic management and international business at The George Washington University School of Business. From Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Amy did her undergraduate degrees in Business and English Literature at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has five years of experience in marketing, communications and strategic planning, and has worked both internationally and in Canada’s oil and gas industry.  At GW, Amy is co-founder and President of GW MBA Toastmasters.  Her post-MBA goal is to do strategic planning for an international company that has a particular focus on China.








Matt Williams is a 2012 Global MBA candidate with a focus in Environmental Management and Policy. After receiving his BBA in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin, Matt worked as a sales representative for a wine distributor in Dallas before making the switch to consulting. As a consultant Matt worked on IT projects in multiple industries including oil & gas, financial services, manufacturing and non-profit. Matt is very interested in leveraging his energy and consulting experience to help businesses address environmental sustainability problems.





Christie Witzig is a 2012 Global MBA candidate.  She graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in economics.  She worked at the Corporate Executive Board, conducting best practices research on strategic HR with the Corporate Leadership Council and IT management with the CIO Executive Board. Christie serves on the board of the DC Area Phi Beta Kappa Association and coordinates their scholarship for local high school seniors.  She plans to pursue a career in HR after earning her MBA.
